The situation on the River Danube is critical because of large ice drifts that have made sailing the river impossible, Bulgarian media said on February 7 2012.

On most of the Bulgarian stretch of the river, ice cover had reached 80 per cent, television station bTV said.

The ice cover was 80 per cent at Nikopol, Svishtov and Silistra and 60 per cent at Rousse.

The situation was expected to deteriorate on February 8 as the ice cover spread and thickened.

At the mouth of the river, in Romanian territory, ice drifts had completely blocked shipping, reports said.

Dnevnik reported the Road Infrastructure Agency as saying that because of serious snow drifts, all exit routes from Rousse were closed.

Separately, the port of Varna on Bulgaria’s Black Sea was reported to be closed because of strong winds, as was the port at Balchik.
