There is a danger of avalanches in Bulgaria’s mountains, Mountain Rescue warned on February 7 2012 as the country faced further drenchings of heavy rain and snowfall.

Mountain Rescue urged skiers and snowboarders to stay on the official tracks.

They said that those venturing into the mountains to ski should take signal devices and the necessary tools, and to go only in groups because if someone was caught in an avalanche, the initial best hope was that others in the group could dig them out, a report by television station bTV said.

* An avalanche has closed the road to Bodrost winter resort in Rila Mountain. The avalanche dragged down earth and trees, deputy mayor of Blagoevgrad Stoyan Blagoev, who was at the scene, was quoted by local news agency Focus as saying.

He said that a crisis team had been set up to solve the problem and clear the area. "The cleaning of the road will probably take two days," Blagoev said.
