The Foreign Ministry in Sofia has recommended to Bulgarians not to travel in the region severely hit by harsh winter weather which has seen heavy snowfalls and below-zero temperatures.

Because of the heavy snowfall and prolonged cold spell, with temperatures below minus 10 degrees Celsius yesterday, the Serbian government declared an emergency throughout the country, the Foreign Ministry in Sofia said in a statement on February 6 2012.

About 5000km of secondary and local roads are impassable, the ministry statement said.

There is also a disaster situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Snow in places exceeds 1.5m and temperatures fell to minus 15 to minus 20 degrees Celsius, the statement said.

The road situation in some regions of Montenegro and of Croatia was also very difficult, the Foreign Ministry said.

"The Foreign Ministry recommends that Bulgarian citizens do not attempt a journey, unless in extreme necessity, until the situation in the region has stabilised."
