Amid the heavy snowfall and sub-zero temperatures that have much of Europe in their grip, Serbia has declared a state of emergency throughout its territory, Romania has declared a "Code Orange" weather warning in 19 counties and Bucharest and part of southern Greece has been hard-hit by flooding.

The government in Belgrade declared on February 5 that all of Serbia was in a state of emergency, B92 Radio said, a decision prompted by problems in road clearing and providing supplies of food, medicine and electricity.

Before the declaration of the national state of emergency, 37 municipalities in Serbia had declared emergencies.

In Greece, an 80-year-old woman drowned and dozens of families were trapped in their homes in the Peloponnesian prefecture of Ileia after heavy rainfall led to serious flooding, authorities said on February 5, Greek daily Kathimerini reported.

On February 6, Bucharest and 19 counties in Romania were under a "Code Orange" weather warning, the Bucharest – Constanta highway and 47 national roads were closed, while rail and air travel also were affected, Romanian news agency Mediafax said.
