Wintry weather prompts Bulgaria – Romania border checkpoint traffic halt

Two workers walk during snow fall in a park in Bucharest, February 5 2012. Bitterly cold weather sweeping across Europe claimed more victims on February 5 and brought widespread disruption to transport services, with warnings that the chilling temperatures would remain into next week.

Traffic at all Bulgarian-Romanian border checkpoints was being stopped from 6pm on February 5 2012, Bulgaria’s Interior Ministry said.

Icy roads were expected across Bulgaria on the night of February 5, the Road Infrastructure Agency said, quoted by local news agency Focus.

Motorists should drive very carefully and at a speed suitable for the weather conditions and conditions of roads, the agency said.

Although snow had been removed from the country’s motorways and main roads, icy road sections were likely. If possible, trips at night should be postponed.

On February 6 and 7, Snowfall is expected in the western part of the Danube Valley and the district of Sofia. Rain in southern Bulgaria is expected.

Over the next few days, minimum temperatures in Bulgaria will be very low, in most regions reaching minus 15 to minus 20 degrees Celsius, in some places even lower.
