A "Code Orange" hazardous weather warning was declared in eight districts in Bulgaria on February 5, with three facing the lesser "Code Yellow" warning.

The eight districts are Smolyan, Kurdjali, Veliko Turnovo, Rousse, Turgovishte, Razgrad, Shoumen and Silistra.

Code Yellow was declared in the districts of Pleven, Lovech and Gabrovo.

Local flooding was possible in the Rhodopes, given the heavy build-up of snow and the prediction of heavy rain.

On February 5, the roads agency said that visibility was limited on the Varna – Dobrich and Turgovishte – Prolaz roads, because of fog.

Visibility was limited to about 100m in the Razgrad and Dobrich districts, while near Stara Zagora visibility was about 150m.

Road authorities warned of wet road surfaces because of snow and rain on the Hemus, Maritza and Lyulin motorways.

The weather forecast for February 6 onwards indicated that there would be snow in the north-western part of the country, and rain in the south-east.

February 7 was forecast to see heavy rain and snow in most parts of the country, with snow continuing on February 8 but rain easing off. Over the next five days, average temperatures would fall, to minimums between minus eight and minus three degrees Celsius, with highs between minus seven and minus two.

Meanwhile, after earlier concerns about a decrease in gas supplies, Bulgaria’s Economy, Energy and Tourism Ministry said on February 4 that natural gas deliveries to Bulgaria and other countries in the region were back to normal.
