Temperatures are finally returning to something resembling "normality" following a spell of record freezing conditions throughout Bulgaria.

Sofia's commuters met snowy conditions as they journeyed to work on the morning of February 3. The temperature in the capital was minus five degrees, no longer exceptionally cold for the time of year. Just a couple of days ago the early morning temperature was minus 19 degrees. Elsewhere in Bulgaria, Veliko Turnovo was minus 11 degrees, Varna minus five and Plovdiv minus six.  Only the far north of Bulgaria was still in the grip of an exceptionally cold snap. Vidin and Rousse were both minus 12 degrees.

Elsewhere in Europe temperatures were also starting to rise. Athens was a mild eight degrees, Istanbul was three degrees and Izmir seven degrees. But Moscow, at minus 11, Kyiv at minus 13 and Bucharest at minus 12 still remained within the grip of the big freeze.

Meanwhile, London was also experiencing some unusually cold weather, standing at minus two degrees.
