The worst of the extreme cold may have passed in Bulgaria but the rest of Europe continues to endure temperatures well below the seasonal average.

Sofia registered minus nine degrees Celsius at 11.30am on February 2, am improvement on the previous day but extreme freezing conditions persisted elsewhere. Moscow was minus 17 degrees, Kyiv minus nine degrees and Warsaw minus 17 degrees. London, supposedly undergoing an unusually cold spell, was a mild capital by comparison, registering freezing point.

Further south, there was little respite from the cold. Istanbul was still languishing at freezing point, as was Salonika in Greece. Athens was four degrees, Rome was just three degrees and Nice, the capital of the cote d'azur was just four degrees. Red Cross teams were busy handing out food and tea to the Mediterranean city's homeless citizens as the mercury fell below freezing point overnight.

Palma de Mallorca, traditionally the nearest place for British sun-seekers to get away from their grey winter, could only muster seven degrees on the morning of February 2, likewise Portuguese capital Lisbon.
