A "Code Orange" weather warning was in force in 10 districts in Bulgaria on February 2 2012, while over much the country heavy snowfall heralded a respite from the record low temperatures of recent days.

The Code Orange warning covered Plovdiv, Vidin, Montana, Vratsa, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Stara Zagora and Pazardzhik

Eleven record-low temperatures were recorded at 8am on February 2, but the lows were not as extreme as those registered in recent days.

Records were set in, among other cities and towns, Plovdiv (minus 17 degrees Celsius), Vidin (minus 21.2 degrees) and Chirpan (minus 20.8 degrees).

After a reported record low on February 1 of minus 19 degrees in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital city reported minus 12.8 degrees on February 2.

The Road Infrastructure Agency said that road surfaces were snowy and icy but driveable if caution was exercised. All major roads had been sanded and treated, the agency said.

Snowdrifts were reported to be obstructing traffic in some parts of the Varna, Dobrich and Silistra regions.
