February 1 brought another round of record low temperatures in Bulgaria as most of the country faced a "Code Orange" weather warning.

The warning was in force in all districts except the Black Sea’s Bourgas, where the lesser "Code Yellow" was in force.

New records for minimum temperatures were set in 16 places in Bulgaria on February 1. The previous day, capital city Sofia set a record with a minimum of minus 18.8 degrees Celsius, lower than the 1909 record of 18.3. Reports put the capital’s early morning temperature on February 1 at minus 19.

On January 31, more than 450 schools in various parts of the country were closed because of the freezing weather.

Motorists were warned that many roads in the country were hazardous because of icy surfaces.

Electricity consumption soared as people sought to stave off the cold.

On February 1, Knezha reported a temperature of minus 29.4 degrees, breaking the 1929 record of minus 26.5.

Among larger cities, Plovdiv reported minus 24.4 degrees, breaking the 1963 record, and Veliko Turnovo minus 22 degrees, breaking its 1996 record.

Forecasts said that the weather would moderate on February 3, with temperatures higher by about four to five degrees, with snow in several places.
