Cold blast reaches Mediterranean hotspots

Rising poverty and homelessness in Athens have been made worse by the recent cold spell

Daytime highs in Bulgaria on January 31 were pitifully low: Sofia minus 7 degrees Celsius (a shade higher than expected), Plovdiv minus eight degrees and Rousse minus nine.

Vidin in the far north reached a "high" of only minus 14.

The cold snap, however, has not just been restricted to the countries of continental climate in eastern Europe. Turkey's largest city, Istanbul, saw heavy snowfall and an afternoon high of just minus three degrees. Antalya, the playground of wealthy tourists on the south coast, saw a daytime high of just nine degrees while Izmir, a favourite of British package holidaymakers, could only muster a high of three degrees.

Greece did not fare any better. Athens and Salonika barely made it past freezing point all day and Naxos, in the Greek islands, could manage only seven degrees. Rhodes, traditionally an all year round destination for sun-seekers, reached 11 degrees and the Cretian capital Heraklion could only reach seven degrees.

The cold blast is expected to last until the end of the week.
