Even as road traffic in Bulgaria was returning to normal after the serious disruption caused by the severe snowy and windy weather of recent days, freezing temperatures were forecast for the last days of January and the month of February.

January 29 saw a "Code Yellow" weather warning for the whole country except Blagoevgrad and Kyustendil.

The previous day, the ban on heavy-duty lorries using roads in Dobrich, Varna, Silistra and Bourgas was lifted.

Driving the Pamporovo, Prevala, Rozhen and Pechinsko passes was allowed only if vehicles’ tyres were fitted with snow chains. The towing of trailers on these passes was banned.

January 29 saw temperatures plummeting to as low as minus 17 degrees Celsius in places, television station bTV said.

For the capital city Sofia, the forecast high on January 29 was minus five degrees, and for January 30, a minimum of minus 18, rising to a high of minus nine degrees Celsius.

Very cold temperatures would persist throughout the coming week, weather forecasters said.
