VIPs, family, friends and fans turned out in force on January 27 2012 to pay tribute to the memory of Kosta Tsonev, a star in the firmament of Bulgaria’s acting greats, who died on January 25 at the age of 82.

Tsonev, perhaps best known for his appearances in Man of La Mancha/Don Quixote, appeared in more than 200 films and was given the Union of Bulgarian Artists’ Askeer lifetime achievement award.

His theatre appearances included Shakespearian roles. According to Bulgarian National Radio, Tsonev – in the course of a career that won him national fame and admiration – played more than 1000 roles.

Tsonev also had a political role, sitting for Simeon Saxe-Coburg’s National Movement for Stability and Progress in the Parliament elected in 2001. As the oldest member, Tsonev had the privilege of presiding over the opening moments of the first sitting, pending the election of a Speaker.

As a member of the parliamentary committee on culture, he worked on legislation on the film industry regarding funding for Bulgaria’s movie-making industry.
