Some flights that had been due to land at Sofia Airport on January 26 2012 were diverted to other airports as heavy snow fell on Bulgaria.
Runways at the Bulgarian capital city’s airport were being cleared every 30 minutes, according to the website of the airport in updates posted in the morning and mid-afternoon.
One early morning arrival, the 6.40am Czech Airlines flight from Prague, was diverted to the airport at Bulgaria’s Black Sea city of Bourgas.
Between noon and 3pm, a Wizz Air flight from Dortmund was diverted to land in the Macedonian capital city’s airport at Skopje, an EasyJet flight from Gatwick was diverted to Greece’s Thessaloniki, while Austrian and Lufthansa flights also were diverted to Thessaloniki.
A Bulgaria Air flight from Rome was delayed because of the late arrival of another flight, Sofia Airport said.
A Polish Airlines flight from Warsaw was diverted to Romanian capital city Bucharest, as was an Air France flight from Paris – Charles de Gaulle.
An Aeroflot flight from Moscow was delayed because of bad weather conditions in Sofia, while a Bulgaria Air flight from Madrid was delayed because of the late arrival of another flight.
Between noon and 3pm, departures from Sofia Airport also were affected.
A Wizz Air flight to London Luton was delayed because of the late arrival of another flight, Sofia Airport said. A British Airways flight was delayed for the same reason.
An Air France flight to Paris was delayed because of bad weather conditions in Sofia.
Bulgarian National Television said on its 4pm news bulletin that the airports at Bourgas and Plovdiv were operating normally.
The queue, mostly made of cargo trucks, was on the Romanian side of the Danube River and the reason was slow processing of incoming traffic by Romanian border police.
Elsewhere, at 10am on February 22, London was seven Celsius, Moscow minus four Celsius, Istanbul seven Celsius, Salonika eight Celsius, Athens 11 Celsius and Antalya 12 Celsius.
