Four Republican nominees – Mitt Romney, Ron Paul, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich – are still bidding for their party's nomination and the chance to face president Barack Obama in November.

Former house speaker Gingrich's surprise win in South Carolina seems to have enlivened a race that many had presumed was going Romney's way. Gingrich is also the favourite to win the Florida primary at the end of January.
