The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Sofia, in a statement on January 19, called on Bulgarian nationals in Syria to leave the country at the earliest opportunity, given the continuing destabilisation of the situation there and the threat to their security, the ministry said.

"We advise all who intend to travel to Syria to not proceed, regardless of the purpose of the visit," the Foreign Ministry said.

For further information or any assistance in this respect, Bulgarian citizens may contact the Embassy’s consular service. However, the ministry cautioned that if the situation deteriorated, the embassy would not be able to render assistance.

Arab League monitors are preparing to report on the situation in Syria, after a one-month mission to observe the government's efforts to implement a plan aimed at stopping its bloody crackdown on a 10-month uprising, the Voice of America said on January 19.

The mandate for the monitor mission expires on January 19, and Arab League foreign ministers are scheduled to meet on January 22 to review the observers' final report and decide what to do next.

The UN Security Council was told earlier this month that 400 people had been killed during the monitors' first 10 days in the country. The UN had previously said that more than 5000 had died since March, the BBC reported.
