Film review: Classic holiday films

Like Santa Claus, mistletoe and eggnog, you can't have Christmas without the couch, and this short list of films comprises some of the more substantial entries in the festive season's entertainment category.

1. It's a Wonderful Life (1946)

Directed by Frank Capra

With Jimmy Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore

Bound to pop up on television at the end of every year, Frank Capra's evergreen Christmas film isn't all smiles and feel-good vibes. When George Bailey (Jimmy Stewart in one of his best roles) is driven to despair and prepares to commit suicide one cold Christmas Eve, we hear the prayers going out to the heavens above. A rookie angel called Clarence Odbody is tasked with showing him what the world would have been like had he never lived to contribute to it. Everybody ought to recognize that they share at least some of George's hopes and dreams, and Capra's phenomenal faith in the human spirit is another dream the viewer would like to share.
