Prostitutes in Sofia are planning a public protest to demand their rights, according to a report by Bulgarian television station bTV.

Sex workers from the Bulgarian capital city's Ring Road say that they want to be free of police harassment, they want their trade legalised, "and to pay taxes and social insurance like everyone else," the report said.

The prostitutes intended protesting outside Parliament on August 31. They said for the past month, police had been stopping them from working on the Ring Road.

They said that each month, they went for medical check-ups.

BTV quoted a prostitute that it identified as "Reni" as saying that she herself had chosen to be a sex worker, like almost all of her colleagues.

Asked how much the prostitutes were paid, Reni (54), said: "Every time is different. We're like fishermen, we cast our lines and what we catch, we catch. The more, the better".

If these women were truly 'independent' then legalisation would offer them and their punters some level of security, with regular health checks and certification etc BUT unfortunately they are not independent and legalisation would only serve to legalise the illigal income of thier pimps!
