Tens of thousands of people filled St. Peter's Square at Vatican City to overflowing Sunday to witness Pope Benedict conduct Easter Mass.

The pope celebrated Mass at an altar set up on the steps of St. Peter's Basilica and under a canopy to shield him from rain or sun. During the Mass, Benedict will deliver his "Urbi et Orbi" message – a blessing to the city and the world.

The pope led the world's Roman Catholics into Easter with a late-night Mass Saturday at the Basilica.

During the Saturday service, he baptized six people and lit a candle that symbolized the resurrection.

Easter is the day Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead three days after His death. It is the most sacred date on the Christian calendar.
