The Bulgarian Air Force will receive its third Alenia C-27J Spartan aircraft on March 31 at the Vrazhdebna air base, Bulgarian media reported.

Initially, five aircraft were ordered by the Bulgarian Government, of which two were received as of December 2010 when the Bulgarian officials announced the order would be reduced to three. This is the last of the Spartans that was due to be delivered.

The Alenia C-27J Spartan is a medium-sized military transport aircraft. It will be used by the Bulgarian forces for troop deployment, cargo, medical assistance and evacuation, organ transplant, and by the Bulgarian army paratroopers, as well as "interior ministry special operations", the report said.

The three aircraft will also be deployed in international military exercises, bTV said. The C-27J is an advanced derivative of Alenia Aeronautica's G.222, with the engines and systems of the Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules. The aircraft was selected as the Joint Cargo Aircraft (JCA) for the United States military.

The C-27J has also been ordered by the militaries of Italy, Greece, Lithuania, Morocco, and Romania.
