Fresh FMD fears in southeast Bulgaria

The foot-and-mouth (FMD) outbreak in Bulgaria is still not tackled completely, as there are reports of potentially infected animals in the village of Stefan Karadjovo, near Yambol in southeastern Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency announced, quoted by local media on February 15 2011.

Routine checks on 15 animals have indicated that they could be infected by FMD. The blood samples have been sent to the national diagnostics veterinary research institute and were expected to be ready by the afternoon of February 15, the reports said.

Should the suspicions be confirmed, local authorities would most likely impose a 10km radius exclusion zone around the village and carry out more checks on the animals in the region. It is also likely that the transportation of animals to and from Yambol will be temporarily suspended, and the region isolated.

There have been no reported cases of FMD in Bulgaria for more than 12 years until 2011, with the latest wave of epidemic believed to have crossed into southeast Bulgaria from Turkey.

FMD is a highly contagious and sometimes fatal viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals, including domestic animals such as cattle, water buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs, as well as antelope, bison and other wild bovines, and deer.
