Athens starts the new week with a new round of public transportation strikes affecting the city's metro system and the rail service, the Bulgaria news agency (BTA) reported on January 31 2011.

The new rail strike is scheduled to coincide with the 40 per cent rise in public transport fares in the city, starting February 1.

Additionally, commuters will be be affected by a parallel bus strike as bus services will stop operating between 11am and 4pm. There have been stoppages on the public transport system every week since the beginning of December last year.

The unions are opposed to the new bill which stipulates wide-ranging public transport reforms, including the transfer of some personnel, the trimming of staff, closer budget monitoring and increased charges. Some of the reforms envisage the rescheduling of certain train services across the country. Some unprofitable lines are to be closed for business altogether, Dnevnik daily reported.

Currently, the standard public transport fare in Athens is one euro, which is valid for 90 minutes of all modes of transport. It will be replaced by a 1.20 euro ticket for single journeys and a 1.40-euro ticket for multiple-journeys, also valid for 90 minutes, Kathimerini reported.
