Heating in Sofia will not be cut off, mayor Yordanka Fandukova said on December 30 2010, after it emerged that heating utility Toplofikatsiya Sofia’s debts to state-owned gas supplier Bulgargaz had passed the 100 million leva mark.

Fandukova told journalists that she had spoken with Bulgargaz and on January 3, there would be a meeting between herself, the Sofia heating utility, and Bulgargaz.

The new management of Toplofikatsiya Sofia should, at this meeting, propose how it would pay its debts to Bulgargaz.

"The obligations are a fact and must be repaid. I hope that an agreement will be reached with Bulgargaz on a payment plan that would secure supplies for the season," Fandukova said.

Bulgargaz executive director Dimitar Gogov told journalists on December 29 that Toplofikatsiya Sofia was in a very serious situation with debts to the gas supplier adding up to 100 million leva.

After the change of management at Toplofikatsiya Sofia was completed, talks would be held with the new managers to resolve the company’s serious debt situation, Gogov said.

He said that Bulgargaz did not rule out the possibility of restricting gas supplies to Toplofikatsiya if the debts continue to mount up at the current alarming speed.
