The ice rink at Ariana Lake in central Sofia, billed as the biggest open-air rink in the Balkans, opened for the winter season on December 12 2010.

There was a big turnout for the opening because admission for the first day was free, Bulgarian National Television said. The opening, attended by Sofia mayor Yordanka Fandukova, was themed "less medicine, more sport".

The 1400 sq m rink will be open all hours until March. Machines will clear the ice every 15 minutes, organisers said.

Novices were advised to stay close to the cushioned boards at the edge of the rink, Bulgarian National Television said.

Admission is four leva. The price for hiring skates is the same.
