Russian energy company Inter Rao is keen to acquire the Bulgarian assets of Italian power giant Enel, in particular its 73 per cent share in coal-fired plant Maritsa East-3 and the Kamen Briag and Shabla wind farms.

In turn, the Russian company is offering either own shares or a blocking stake in Enel OGK-5, one of the largest power producers in central Russia, business daily Kommersant said, citing Inter Rao's head Boris Kovalchuk.

According to the CEO, the Russian state is ready to offload its 26.4 per cent interest in Enel OGK-5 to the Italian company, which currently owns 56.4 per cent in the power producer.

Should the transaction take place, Inter Rao would emerge as the biggest energy company in Bulgaria, providing more than 12 per cent of the country's electricity.

According to Italian media, Inter Rao is among the five companies that have expressed interest in Enel's stake in Maritsa East-3, which is estimated at 600 million euro.
