British low-cost airline EasyJet has suspended its flights from the Bulgarian capital to the Italian northern city of Milan, the Sofia airport's seasonal flights schedule shows.

The flights were terminated because the route proved unprofitable, a source close to the company said.

EasyJet, which launched the Sofia-Milan Malpensa destination in 2008, will nevertheless continue to serve its flights to London, Madrid and Manchester, according to the company’s website.

In March 2010, the Sofia-Milan route was also suspended by Italy's flag carrier Alitalia, but two months later flights between the two cities were resumed by the country's national carrier Bulgaria Air. The destination is currently served by two airlines, Bulgaria Air and Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air.
