The Leonid meteor shower display, which was expected to have peaked on the night of November 17 into November 18 2010, will continue for some time.

The display, named for the Leo constellation, occurs when the Earth passes through debris from the Temple-Tuttle comet.

The last spectacular display occurred in 2001, and generally the Leonids have peak displays about every 33 years.

Stargazers say that the best time to observe the Leonids is between midnight and dawn, given that in the night sky, the display has competition from the waxing moon.

According to the observatory at Jodrell Bank in the UK, the radiant of the shower - from where the meteors appear to radiate - lies within the head or Sickle of the constellation Leo the Lion.

Meteor shower for the Earth tonight

Stars will be raining tonight and on the night of August 13, scientists have promised. The Perseid meteor shower takes place when Earth enters the outskirts of a cloud of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle.
