Syrian president Bashar al Assad is to visit Bulgaria on November 9 and 10 2010, the first visit to the country by a Syrian head of state in the past 24 years.

Al-Assad is visiting at the invitation of Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov. Prime Minister Boiko Borissov will host a lunch in Al-Assad’s honour and the Syrian president will meet the Speaker of Parliament, Tsetska Tsacheva.

According to a media statement by President Purvanov’s office, Al-Assad and Purvanov will review bilateral relations in the context of Bulgaria’s European Union membership, and will discuss opportunities to increase bilateral commercial and investment co-operation.

Purvanov and Al Assad, who has been president of Syria since 2000 and was re-confirmed in office in 2007 for a further seven-year term, will also discuss the Middle East and the course of the peace process as well as other topical international issues, Purvanov’s office said.
