The Bulgarian Parliament has adopted a draft resolution on the adoption of a White Paper that will open the way for a further far-reaching downsizing of the Bulgarian armed forces, Dnevnik daily said on October 28 2010.

The draft was approved in a 95  - 18 vote with eight abstentions. The White Paper envisages cutting Bulgarian military personnel from a current 44 100 down to 37 000 by 2013.

According to the latest downsizing, 5700 military personnel and 1300 civilians employed by the armed services will be released. About 750 personnel serving in the armed forces administration are considered as surplus to requirements and will be made redundant, while the command staff must not exceed more than 2.5 per cent of their respective subordinate structures.

New laws and regulations are also to be implemented in 2011 affecting the military police and the military intelligence department. They are to be enacted by 2012, the report said.

37,000 troops defending what exactly, from whom ? You could half it totally to 22,000 and it would still be to many. Why not pay off 22,000 and the money saved put into universities. More educated people, country prospers. Rather than guarding it from nobody in particular.
