Bulgaria's Pironkova stumbles in US Open second round

Bulgaria's top player in the WTA Tour, Tsvetana Pironkova, failed to improve her track record at the US Open, bowing out in the second round after a loss to Luxembourg's Mandy Minella in two sets (4-6, 0-6).

Pironkova's surprise run to the Wimbledon semi-finals pushed her WTA Tour ranking to 34th in the world and she was seeded for the first time in her career at a grand slam event, but the Bulgarian's poor service and nine double faults opened the door for an aggressive Minella to break serve repeatedly, winning the last eight games of the match.

It was the sixth US Open appearance for Pironkova (22) in the US Open, but only the second time she reached the second round of the competition.

Minella, who is ranked 185 in the world and never ranked higher than 150, stormed through qualifying, winning three matches and dropping only one set. She defeated world number 47 Polona Herzog in the first round and now faces a third-round match against third-seed Venus Williams.
