Bulgaria condemns the terrorist attack in Hebron on August 31 in which four Israelis, including a pregnant woman, were killed, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Vessela Tcherneva said.

The attack took place as Israeli and Palestinian leaders prepared to meet for their first direct face-to-face peace negotiations, in Washington on September 2 2010, after an interruption of close to two years.

Acts of violence such as the attack in Hebron undermine trust between parties, and restoration of confidence was a key factor in the resumption of direct dialogue, Tcherneva said.

In this regard, Bulgaria welcomed the timely actions of the Palestinian authority in arresting the Hamas members responsible for the attack, she said.

More than ever, it was necessary to show a sense of responsibility to prevent an escalation of violence that could destroy chances for peace in the region, Tcherneva said.
