Bulgaria’s Regional Development and Public Works Minister Rosen Plevneliev and Macedonia’s local government minister Musa Xhaferi were scheduled to sign on August 31 2010 a memorandum of understanding on the implementation of a Bulgarian – Macedonian cross-border co-operation programme, according to a statement on the website of Plevneliev’s ministry.

The programme, approved by the European Commission in December 2007, is funded from EU pre-accession funds and from the national budgets of Bulgaria and Macedonia.

The programme’s budget for 2007 to 2011 is about 14.2 million euro and will be spent on projects in two regions of Bulgaria, Blagoevgrad and Kyustendil, and in three regions of Macedonia – north, east and south-east, according to Plevneliev’s ministry.

The programme’s priorities are economic development, social cohesion and improving quality of life, the statement said.
