David Harris, head of the American Jewish Committee (AJC) will receive the Madara Horseman order First Class from Bulgarian President Georgi Purvanov during an official ceremony, a media statement by Purvanov's office said.

The ceremony will be held on August 24 at the presidential office at 2 Dondoukov Boulevard. Harris will be honoured for his "outstanding contribution to bilateral relations between Bulgaria and the United States," the statement said.

An AJC delegation, headed by Harris, arrived in Bulgaria over the weekend to take part in the Summer University of the European Union of Jewish Students (EUJS), the Bulgarian Jewish organisation Shalom said in a media statement.

Harris is a recipient of the French Légion d'honneur, personally awarded to him by French foreign minister Phillipe Douste-Blazy in New York, in addition to the highest public service awards from the governments of Poland, Germany and Bulgaria: in 1999, he was honoured by the Polish government for his efforts concerning Nato expansion, in 2000 by the German government for his contribution to German-Jewish and German-American relations, in 2001 and again in 2002 by the Bulgarian government for his contribution to transatlantic relations.

He was also twice honoured in 2005 by the French government for his commitment to democratic and humanistic values.

This is the first time that the Summer University is held in an Eastern European country.

Congratulations Mr. Harris. You are walking alongside individuals like Elie Weisel who stand for peace in our time. I always feel inspired when I read in this newspaper about individuals who are committed to humanistic values.
I am sure the EUJS organization also benefits from such proactive leadership.
