Editorial: Corporate transparency

The Government's decision to limit access to the commercial register is a double-edged sword. Under the new proposals some information will remain available free of charge, namely the company name, date of registration, its registration address and the list of documents filed by the company. Everything else, however, would require paid access.

The identity of the person submitting the application would also be revealed. At first glance it would seem a sensible decision. In particular, it might reduce opportunities for fraud, since corporate identity theft has been a developing trend.

On the other hand, nothing theoretically could prevent a fictitious company or individual gaining access to company data. In addition, the new measure risks creating barriers to transparency. Public figures must remain accountable and their dealings accessible to the public.
