Ryanair is launching its first Bulgarian connection from London Stansted to Plovdiv, a company media statement said on August 5 2010.

The new route will bring Ryanair’s annual traffic at Plovdiv to about 30 000 passengers, while sustaining 30 local jobs permanently in the process, according to the media statement.

The news that the company will be operating from to and from Plovdiv was reported early in 2010. Again, in May, Ryanair, confirmed it contemplated flying to and from Bulgaria’s second largest city starting September 2010, Bulgaria's Deputy Economy and Tourism Minister Ivo Marinov was quoted as saying at the time by Bulgarian-language media.

To launch flights to Bulgaria, Ryanair asked for lower landing fees charged by the country's airports, Marinov said during a discussion in Parliament on the topic of Bulgarian tourism.

Now, Ryanair celebrated this new Plovdiv route by offering eight euro seats across its network for travel in September to November which are available for booking until midnight August 5, the media statement said.

"Ryanair is delighted to announce its first Bulgarian connection from London Stansted to Plovdiv to provide Bulgarian consumers and British visitors the guaranteed lowest fares from/to Bulgaria"

"The new route will ensure that Plovdiv and its regional tourism will develop further and even more jobs will be created both in the city and in the region," Ryanair said.

Great news but we need Ryanair to fly to Varna. The prices we have had to pay this year are ridiculous.

No more new flights will be needed at all. Railway and public transport refurbishment is needed instead of giving this private company subsidized landing fees which all people of Bulgaria and the Plovdiv region will have to pay through their taxes and lack of funding for other projects with a better RoI. 30 employees ensured by how many millions to keep up this ridiculous little airport? Same with Leipzig-Altenburg in Germany, for instance.

Great news ! A connection from London Stansted is just the beginning - but connections from other places like Paris Beauvais, Barcelona, Madrid, Rome Ciampino, Milan Bergamo, Bologna, Pisa, Venezia Treviso, Bruxelles Charleroi, Frankfurt Hahn, Bratislava ... - are needed.
