Two Bulgarian nationals celebrating on a yacht sparked a forest fire on the island of Diaporos island, near Polygyros, off the coast of the Chalkidiki peninsula, media reports said on July 27 2010.

Reportedly, the Bulgarians shot signal rockets while sailing in a yacht on the night of July 24, some of which landed in a forestry area, local authorities in Polygyros told the media.

Allegedly, the Bulgarians were celebrating on board the yacht and were somewhat intoxicated. The yacht was between the island and the tourist resort of Vourvourou. Vourvourou is about 10km from Agios Nikolaos, which in turn is about 120km from Thessaloniki on the Sithonia peninsula. The town of Polygyros is the capital of the prefecture of Chalkidiki.

The fire was eventually brought under control on the night of July 24 by local authorities. The Bulgarians were later arrested by police in Polygyros.
