The Bulgarian Navy said on July 15 that there had been no collision between the Antigua-flagged container carrier MCS Equador and two Bulgarian navy vessels on the evening of July 14, as previously reported by Bulgaria media.

Initial reports said that the container ship MSC Equador has struck two Bulgarian navy vessels which were docked in the Varna naval docks. The navy ships allegedly damaged in the incident were reported as the refuelling ship Balchik and the training vessel VVMU 421.

Reportedly, MSC Equador collided with the navy ships while engaged in evasive action to avoid yet another vessel.

But the Navy statement denied that any collision took place, confirming that MCS Equador came close, but the only contact was tangled anchor chains with the navy ships.

The chains were disentangled and MCS Equador left the port of Varna at 7.50 pm. "There was no physical contact between the container carrier and the Bulgarian naval vessels whatsoever," the statement said.

MCS Equador makes routine trips between the United States and Varna.
