Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov held a meeting with experts from United States fuel company Chevron and US ambassador James Warlick, who briefed him on prospects for shale gas extraction in Bulgaria, Bulgarian media reported on July 13 2010.

"Bulgaria has the potential to extract up to 25 billion cubic metres shale gas if the deposits are found," Warlick said, cited by Dnevnik daily.

"The extraction of shale gas here could potentially change the market in the region, as it happened in the United States," Warlick was quoted as saying.

When asked by Bulgarian journalists if he wasn't meddling too much in Bulgaria's energy policy, Warlick said that he was only concerned with two issues which he put forward to the Bulgarian Government - "transparency" and "diversification".

According to Warlick, it is still early to discuss the price of the gas, because feasibility studies about extraction have yet to be done.
