The chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) and president of the Palestinian national authority Mahmoud Abbas will visit Bulgaria at the invitation of President Georgi Purvanov on July 13-14, a media statement by the President's office said on July 11 2010.

Purvanov and Abbas "will resume the talks at the highest level, which started during the Palestianian leader's first visit to the country in 2007, followed by Purvbanov's visit to Ramallah in 2008," the media statement said.

The two leaders will discuss future relations between Bulgaria and Palestine as well the current situation in the Middle East.

Abbas is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Boiko Borissov, while Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva will host an official lunch.

Abbas has been chairman of the PLO since November 11 2004 and became president of the Palestinian national authority on January 15 2005 on the Fatah ticket.

Elected to serve until January 9 2009, he unilaterally extended his term for another year and continues to be in office even after that deadline expired. Rival political party Hamas announced it would not recognise his self-appointed extension.
