Commission will monitor Black Sea hotels and restaurants during summer

The Bulgarian Commission for the Protection of Competition (CPC) will launch a systematic campaign to deter Black Sea businesses and entrepreneurs from committing violations, the commission said in a media statement on July 5 2010.

The commission is tasked with ensuring that establishments at Bulgaria's resorts have legitimate accreditation and permits to conduct business. Additionally, the officers will monitor if services offered by the establishments correspond with their respective accreditation, the report said.

The checks will be conducted "randomly" with "an element of surprise", but no further details were disclosed.

To date, the CPC has checked 107 hotels, restaurants and other food outlets as well as 150 small-scale traders. As a result of the investigation, seven establishments were shut due to lack of documentation, while another 90 fines were issued for various violations, the report said.

To further facilitate the efforts and effectiveness of the operation, the National Revenue Agency (NRA) is working in conjunction with the CPC. The NRA opened a bureau at the Bourgas airport that surveys all tour operators and agents on the premises. They are to fill in forms disclosing the exact number of tourists who have used their services, the firms and hotels which are affiliated to their business enterprise, and others.

What is the standard to be maintained? Is it the old Eastern European bloc or minimum standard that applies in the West and Scandinavia? If there is something to be improved is the level of education of staff. How can hotels hire people for example in reciptionens information desk which can hardly English at one of the most expensive hotels in Sunny beach.

It looks like its the police service around Sunny Beach and the Black Sea that should be checked out as the radio programme on the Irish Radio on 6th -7th July was very disturbing. A number of people called the radio station with horror stories of their experiences in and around SB .
