About 9800 people have been granted Bulgarian citizenship since the start of 2010, Minister without portfolio responsible for Bulgarians abroad Bozhidar Dimitrov told Bulgarian news agency Focus on July 2 2010.

That included 496 people at the July 2 meeting of the Citizenship Council, the bulk of which (411) were citizens of Macedonia. Bulgarian passports have also been granted to several Uruguay and Argentina nationals, as well as applicants from the Middle East and Afghanistan.

In the first six months of the year, Bulgaria has already given citizenship to more people than in 2009, when 9040 applications were granted. The process has been sped up in May and June, when the council granted citizenship to about 4000 people.

Although Dimitrov did not provide a country-by-country breakdown for the latest numbers, traditionally most applicants come from Macedonia, followed by Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia and Russia.
