A cement truck has smashed into a group of tourists on the pavement and killed a 64-year-old Scottish woman, as well as severely injuring her husband, Bulgarian national television (BNT) reported on July 2 2010.

The driver was apparently attempting a high-speed turn when he lost control of the vehicle. The truck was working on an illegal construction site and was chased by police when the accident happened, the report said.

Reportedly, all the tourists involved were Scottish.

The accident happened in the Bulgarian coastal resort town of Sveti Vlas. The victim died on the spot, while her husband, 56, was taken to hospital where he is reported to be in a stable condition.

Alcohol tests apparently showed that the driver was not intoxicated. Following a technical inspection, authorities said that the vehicle's breaks were not in any way faulty.

The truck overturned, ending up on the pavement where it hit the tourists. The 60-tonne machine then smashed into the ground floor of the Bademite complex and destroyed the first floor of the building, the report said. Luckily, the cafeteria on the ground floor was still under construction and no customers were inside.

Eyewitnesses said that when the driver managed to crawl out of the vehicle, he appeared to be in complete shock, holding his head and repeating to himself "I think I got it wrong".

if the apartment build-quality doesnt fall in on you, then they get you at source with the baton/cement. All cement lorrys are banned in season, hence the chase, the Police wanting their tip and driver wanting to unload his.

Was Sveti Vlas Mayor Ivan vacationing in Cuba, again, at the time?

No construction, legal or illegal should go on in July!

Actually, in this overgrown village ALL construction should be banned ENTIRELY.

shocking."

Do I detect a fan club here?

It seems as though the anti-EU crowd on the Echo, in their rush to show their own tribalism, are completely missing the real story here:

"The truck was working on an illegal construction site and was chased by police when the accident happened, the report said."

The police in BG "chases" folks engaging in illegal building - that is a very big news here and a development the rest [...]

Read the full comment of the EU has been pushing for... unfortunate for the victims, but no one including the driver, intended to cause them any harm, so spare me your tribal calls for revenge...
Had the driver gotten out of the truck, walked up to the innocent tourists and smashed the lady's head with a brick, like Michael Shields did, that would've been disturbing, unsettling, and criminal, not losing control of a big truck, running away from the cops or not...

Now why am I not surprised at this latest outcome of corrupt practice. It goes without saying, that for most of the time, we all accept this type of behaviour as part and parcel of the Bulgarian construction industry. However, when it leads to the death of a tourist, simply enjoying a holiday with the family, the full force of the law should be brought to bear to prosecute all concerned. In this case, I imagine a firm slap on the wrist will be the only punishment and it'll be left to the poor long suffering victims to seek reparation [...]

My heart goes out to the family of the victim who was doing nothing but having a nice holiday. The police should now convict the driver and also the people who have an illegal site is it about time this was stopped.
