Parties strike coalition deal

Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leader Petr Necas (C) signs the oath after being appointed as a new Czech Prime Minister at Prague Castle in Prague June 28, 2010.

Civic Democratic Party (ODS) leader Petr Nečas was appointed prime minister on June 28, and a coaltion agreement followed in the late hours of June 29, but the enigmatic Public Affairs (VV) party is again prompting questions about how stable any future government can be.

The government lineup has been finalized between the ODS, VV and TOP 09 (liberal conservative party). The three parties will control 118 of 200 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. The ODS, in addition to the post of prime minister, will control the justice and defence ministries. TOP 09 holds the foreign affairs, finance and health ministries, while VV took the top posts in the interior and transportation ministries. Overall, the ODS holds six cabinet positions, while TOP 09 has five and VV four.
