Fireworks on August 20 may fall victim to recent floods as a call to cancel the event and offer its funding to flood victims gathered more than 150 000 supporters on Facebook in less than a week. "The HUF 100 million (349 500 euro) the state would save by cancelling the event may seem insignificant compared to the HUF 100 billion (349.51 million euro) damage the flood has caused, this would certainly be a nice gesture towards the people affected by the catastrophe", government press secretary Anna Nagy said, adding that the cabinet will discuss the issue this week.

Deputy prime minister Tibor Navracsics said cabinet is considering three options: cancelling events of August 2 - in their entirety, reducing the attractions to a very short, token fireworks display or drastically cutting the budget available for Saint Stephen’s Day celebrations and reallocating the money to those in the biggest need.
