Police in Bulgaria's second largest city of Plovdiv have discovered taxi drivers working without a legitimate driver's licence, a work permit or proper documentation for their vehicles, the Bulgaria news agency (BTA) reported on April 24 2010.

Interior Ministry and National Revenue Agency officers conducted the operation in conjunction with local police, the Transport Ministry said in a media statement.

A total of 149 taxis were checked, of which 12 revealed violations of varying degrees. A total of three taxis were banned from continued operation.

Among the most common violations detected by the authorities were the lack of drivers' licences and insurance papers. Some drivers were also found to be flouting working hours directives. Others lacked documentation indicating that their vehicles had passed annual safety checks. Additionally, some people did not have permits to work as taxi drivers.

People without valid driving licence, without valid taxi licence, maybe old and insecure vehicles ... many have tried to earn some extra money under the table - thank God this raid happened - but it should happen times before ! How many clients got ripped off and complained unsuccessfully - now somebody woke up and organized these checks ...
