Mosquito alert after floods

Some villages hit by recent floods are suffering a "mosquito calamity," and a scourge of the insects is expected over the coming months as experts disagree on what constitutes a "calamity."

Widespread flooding in the Moravia-Silesia region provided ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes, and experts believe the situation has reached dangerous levels, with many areas facing difficulties and hefty costs in battling the onslaught.

"The usual definition of a calamitous situation [in terms of mosquitoes] is 30 mosquito bites a minute," said Oldřich Šebesta, a mosquito expert at the Academy of Science in Brno. "But the occurrence of mosquito bites is now higher because of the long-term rain and flooding that has already occurred twice this year. The situation is worse than I expected in my prognosis in May, especially due to the recent heavy rainfall."

If my memory serves me right thy bread in stagnant water and a small amount of diesel on liquid paraffin will stop them, so put some in any ponds, swimming pools etc.
