The Bulgarian sailors who spent nearly five months in captivity on board the UK flagged ship Asian Glory returned to Varna on June 17, Bulgarian media reported.

The crew of the eight Bulgarians consists of skipper Veliko Velikov, and sailors Todor Todorov, Ilia Iliev, Rossen Ivanov, Nikola Atanassov, Adlen Adlenov and Vedri Mehmed. The last member of the crew has been flown to Sofia, the private Bulgarian television channel bTV said.

Velikov expressed his gratitude to the crisis task force established by the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry which facilitated the release of the crew.

"This is war. This is a war, not about land or power, it's all about money" he told bTV.

The British ship, owned by Zodiac, was hijacked by pirates in the Indian Ocean at the beginning of January. The crew comprised eight Bulgarians, 10 Ukrainians, five Indians and two Romanians. Once it was freed, Asian Glory was escorted to Oman by a Royal Navy ship. All other crew members are also reported safe.

The ship was reportedly ferrying 2305 Korean-made cars from Singapore to Saudi Arabia.

There are still 15 Bulgarian sailors help captive by Somalia pirates at the moment. The Bulgarian chemical tanker Panega was attacked in the Gulf of Aden on May 11 with 15 crew members on board, all Bulgarian nationals.

According to initial reports, the tanker was headed from the Red Sea en route to Pakistan.
