Bulgarian sailors from Asian Glory to land in Varna

Marines from the Spanish frigate, Blas de Lezo, talk to suspected pirates in their skiff in the Gulf of Aden in this photo dating from June 2009.

The Bulgarian sailors who endured months of capture and hardship at the hands of Somali pirates are to arrive in Varna on the night of June 17 2010, the Foreign Ministry said in a media statement.

The eight Bulgarian sailors will be greeted by authorities, and will give a press conference, reports said. The men spent more than five months in captivity after their ship, the UK flagged Asian Glory, was hijacked in the Indian Ocean at the beginning of January 2010. The crew also comprised 10 Ukrainians, five Indians and two Romanians.

Asian Glory, owned by Zodiac, sailed to Oman while escorted by a Royal Navy ship, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry announced.

The pirates had demanded $15 million in ransom. Supposedly, the figure was the "insurance for the ship and the value of the cargo – all vehicles included". The ship was reportedly ferrying 2305 Korean-made cars from Singapore to Saudi Arabia.
