Bulgaria scraps Bourgas-Alexandroupoulis pipeline, shelves Belene nuke - PM

Prime Minister Boiko Borissov

Bulgaria will permanently pull out of the Bourgas-Alexandropoulis gas pipeline project, Prime Minister Boiko Borissov has told European Union ambassadors, as quoted by Darik Radio on June 11 2010.

Additionally, Bulgaria will freeze indefinitely planned construction of the Belene nuclear power plant because it was uncertain when the investment would be returned, the report said.

The decision to scrap the construction of the Bourgas-Alexandroupoulis pipeline was made because of staunch resistance from residents of the Bulgarian Black Sea city of Bourgas and surrounding region, Borissov said.

The proposed pipeline was planned to traverse through protected areas. "We have no clear guarantees as to when we will see a return on the investment. We also saw what is happening in the Gulf of Mexico," Borissov said, referring to the oil spill in the US which has caused an unprecedented catastrophe.

Residents in Bourgas and neighbouring resort towns have long opposed the construction of the pipeline, which they fear would irreparably damage the tourism business in the region in case of an environmental mishap involving the pipeline.

Greek,
BG is the only Axis country to end the WWII with more land that at the start of it. Check your facts again.

Having a Turkish party in Parliament isn't being Turkish vassals, but it is building representative Democracy. BG Turks have been in BG for centuries and very little is their fault, for they weren't even born the last time we had bloodshed between both nations. If the Greeks didn't cleanse Bulgarians from Northern Greece, and if we in turn didn't kick out the Greeks from the Black Sea region (most of [...]

Read the full comment it was Greek fyi) Greeks too would've had their own representation in government - that's what civilized countries do in the 21st century.
Greek:

"The pipeline was another investment to make both of us more independent and bring a balance in the influence Turkey has in the area and you simply blew it off."

I am trying to enlighten you historically for that same reason - to understand our internal dynamic and pov. I know they didn't tell you that history at school, but BG will NEVER enter a coalition with Serbia or Greece against any one, but Turkey especially, given that pretty much every one of our national catastrophes in the last century, steam from just such ill fated alliance. Now if you would like a geopolitical debate about oil and politics, we can certainly have one, but you'll have to reframe from your traditional Greek insults and name calling of BG. It's useless and it just gives our future marriage a very bad start - in case you are wondering, it's a matter of months or a year at most when the border between us will completely disappear and that in fact will make us more one country than at any time since the days of Byzantium..

BTW - those Bulgarians that used to be in Northern Greece and FYROM that Greece kicked out, and the Serbs worked so hard to re-educate, have come back as Slav Macedonians - a new nationality born out of wedlock between BG and Serbia, and are coming after your precious history - enjoy... there is a price for everything....

Nothing is as black&white as you may have learnt as school..

Valeri
as i said in the WWI you have started preparing to take more lands including Salonica because you thought yourselves to become the great Bulgaria and finally you lost lands like what is today the Greek Thrace. Besides this if we talk about ownership and backstabbing the whole of what is Bulgaria today was snatched from our Byzantine empire by Bulgarian tribes who came from the Volga area 1300 years ago. So forget about the past and look at what is benefiting us today. We have invested in your country when nobody else was coming over there [...]

Read the full comment to start even a grocery shop. The pipeline was another investment to make both of us more independent and bring a balance in the influence Turkey has in the area and you simply blew it off. The Russians will do business with theTturks, the Americans the same and we will be again their vassals. and I say WE because you are already their vassals with the Turkish party in your parliament.

Wait, who's excusing anything?
BG was right to side with the Germans and as far as we are concern all wars are local.
Greece and Serbia stabbed us in the back - not Hitler but the Devil himself would've made a great ally for BG at that point.
Don't forget that we sided with Germany in WWI as we should've, because Austria was anti Serb!
I understand very well what WWII was about and BG did the right thing by siding with Germany - EUs core country may I add...

This discussion about histery is rather off-topic, but when I am challenged I respond. Valeri is not the only Bulgarian who doesn´t understand what the Second World War was about, probably because Bulgaria lived through that war relatively comfortably. Countries that were occupied by the Nazis have different memories. The simple facts are that Bulgaria sided with the most criminal regime the world ever saw. There is no argument that can excuse that. The BG army even bought tanks the Nazis had stolen in Tsjechoslovakia. And Bulgarian troops deported Jews in Greece and Macedonia. Valeri, can you explain what declaring [...]

Read the full comment war on Britain and the US has to do with the Balkan wars? By occupying parts of Greece and Jugoslavia, Bulgaria freed German troops that were used to massacre Russians, Poles and Jews and prolonge the war - what caused death by starvation to thousand of people in Holland. That is aiding and abetting.

in my history it says that after the fisrt balkan wars bulgaria wanted more and attacked first their allies. the rest is history. and by the way Macedonia 90% boulgarians? where did you hear this? nice stories, you hear. point is that you will be now again losers. Russian money will go to Turkey you give a shit about the Americans. The balance of power will make you again an Otoman vasal country. Go now anf bow to your new regionals masters.

I should've said:
Turks Germans Russians Americans, they come and go...

Anonymous Valeri Wed, Jun 16 2010 20:11 CET

PS
this is why BG will never enter in any coalitions with our neighbors - REALY bad experience with that... Unions - sure, like the EU, but not coalitions.

Turks, Germans Russians - they come and go and as they change, our relationship with them changes - BG, like any other country has no permanent friends or enemies, just permanent interests.
This government is taking care of BGs interests as they see it.
They are probably doing the right thing although many of us, including myself, quite resent the US [...]

Greek:

"Bulgaria made a mistake in two world wars and bet on the wrong side"

What ever coherent thoughts you may have about the current situation, are completely negated by your lack of historic information. BG didn't "bet" on any side in any wars - ever since 1913 BG has taken every opportunity to redress the backstabbing of Greece and Serbia in that Balkan war, where our "allies" occupied Macedonia (90% Bulgarian population at the time) while we were holding the front against the Turks at Chatalga.

Too [...]

Read the full comment late for that now, but BG has always bet on one side - that of BG and I hope she will continue to do so...

well Borisov did what he promised to his masters the Americans before being elected. Minimise Russian influence in the area. Of course the excuse used is not the smartest since overground pipeline accidents are nil. Bulgaria made a mistake in two world wars and bet on the wrong side. Now they think by betting on the Americans like our current (half American)prime minister is the smart move. In fact our prime minister is very happy that the Bulgarians had to fix this and not himself, specially these times. The fact is that the Germans want a closer [...]

Read the full comment Russian collaboration with Europe and this project was another one small brick towards this. The only winners in this instance are the Turks who will collaborate more and more with the Russians and make their own pipeline with the Russians alone e.g. through Eastern Thrace. Now my friends Bulgarians bow to the Neo-otomanism and to you old masters who anyway they have their own political party in your country and running it. Balkan countries we are... what do you expect??

If true, this would be one of the smartest moves this government would do.

EU economy commissioner Olli Rehn has said that Bulgaria may have its national statistics examined under new EU audit powers.

Speaking to the press at a meeting of EU finance ministers, he expressed concerns over the country's data.

Ministers have agreed to give the European statistical office new powers to make sure EU governments comply with limits on their borrowing.

Misreporting by the Greek government contributed to the current crisis.
