The water levels of the Danube River in the Rousse region are rising and authorities are on full alert over fears it could burst its banks, with levels exceeding 690cm, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported.

Plamen Stoyanov, municipal administrator in the Rousse region, has warned residents living nearby to take all necessary precautions against a possible flood. An emergency task force, which would be on constant alert, "surveying the water level of the Danube and all tributaries", has also been set up, the report said.

According to Stoyanov, the authorities will be surveying areas such as Ryahovo and will manage the levies installed.

Reportedly, a "high wave" - a water surge - is on its way to Bulgaria from central Europe, expected to arrive "in days", BNT said. Consequently, the Danube's water levels along Bulgarian shores might reach as high as nine metres. A few days earlier, on June 4, the "crisis task force" and the Civil Protection Service started erecting levies to reinforce the river banks.

For the moment, the Danube's levels near the northeastern riverside town of Rousse remain unchanged, at nearly seven metres, which is still not a matter of grave concern because the banks around Rousse are steep and high. Rousse will be in trouble, however, should water levels exceed eight metres.
